چکیده

Assembly of oppositely charged triblock copolyelectrolytes into phase-separated gels at low polymer concentrations (<1% by mass) has been observed in scattering experiments and molecular dynamics simulations. Here we show that in contrast to uncharged, amphiphilic block copolymers that form discrete micelles at low concentrations and enter a phase of strongly interacting micelles in a gradual manner with increasing concentration, the formation of a dilute phase of individual micelles is prevented in polyelectrolyte complexation-driven assembly of triblock copolyelectrolytes. Gel phases form and phase separate almost instantaneously on solvation of the copolymers. Furthermore, molecular models of self-assembly demonstrate the presence of oligo-chain aggregates in early stages of copolyelectrolyte assembly, at experimentally unobservable polymer concentrations. Our discoveries contribute to the fundamental understanding of the structure and pathways of complexation-driven assemblies, and raise intriguing prospects for gel formation at extraordinarily low concentrations, with applications in tissue engineering, agriculture, water purification and theranostics.

Discrete, multi-component complexes with cucurbit[8]uril in the gas-phase.

The formation of modular, multi-component, host-guest complexes stable both in water and in the gas-phase is described; by modulating the stoichiometry of the different subunits in aqueous solution, quantitative self-assembly of the predicted and desired architecture is achieved, even allowing for ABA triblock copolymer assemblies stable in the gas-phase.

SANS from P85/water-d under pressure.

Pluronics are triblock copolymers of poly(ethylene oxide)-poly(propylene oxide)-poly(ethylene oxide). Pluronic P85 forms a rich phase behavior when dissolved in water. Unimers are observed at low temperature while micelles form at higher temperatures. Spherical, cylindrical, and lamellar micelles are observed sequentially upon heating. The effect of hydrostatic pressure on the phase boundaries ...

Thermogelling of double hydrophilic multiblock and triblock copolymers of N,N-dimethylacrylamide and N-isopropylacrylamide: chain architectural and Hofmeister effects.

A series of thermoresponsive double hydrophilic (AB)(n) multiblock and ABA triblock copolymers of N,N-dimethylacrylamide (DMA) and N-isopropylacrylamide (NIPAM) with varying sequence lengths were synthesized via successive reversible addition-fragmentation chain transfer (RAFT) polymerizations by employing polytrithiocarbonate as the chain transfer agent. Previously, we reported that multiblock...

Aggregation number distributions and mesoglobules in dilute solutions of diblock and triblock copolymers

– We investigate the aggregation number and size distributions for inter-molecular clusters of amphiphilic diblock and triblock copolymers in poor solvent at very low concentrations. Diblocks and triblocks with hydrophilic ends are shown to possess narrow distributions corresponding to formation of monodispersed mesoglobules. Diblocks with hydrophobic ends are found to produce inter-cluster mul...
